International School Rheintal (ISR) celebrated the start of construction for its new ecologically sustainable campus in Buchs on Tuesday 26th October, which is scheduled for completion and opening in summer 2023.
On Tuesday 146 students at ISR celebrated this milestone on the way to a modern, ecological school campus together with 50 invited guests as well as teachers, parents, architects, and sponsors.

The new campus offers a world-class facility to match a world-class education. As one of the leading International Baccalaureate Schools in Switzerland, this new ISR campus will further strengthen the Rhein valley as an attractive environment for internationally-minded families and organisations”, says Liz Free, CEO and director of ISR.
Students from ISR's 10th grade, the first cohort to graduate from the new campus, welcomed the guests. The speakers included Dr Daniel Gut, Mayor of Buchs, who highlighted the new building alongside BZB and OST as an integral part of the Buchs education campus, and Michèle Frey-Hilti and Michael Hilti, representing the Hilti Family Foundation Liechtenstein.
"We are very pleased and grateful to the Hilti Family Foundation Liechtenstein for supporting this project that visibly begins, and we are celebrating, today," says Heiner Graf, Member of the board of ISR Infrastruktur AG, which is significantly involved in the planning of the new campus. “For the students in particular, today brings the new campus much closer. And they can now follow the construction progress from their classrooms every day."
As partners and supporters of ISR since its founding in 2002, the Hilti Family Foundation Liechtenstein announced the new campus for ISR in May 2019, due to the growing number of students and the endeavour to continue to make the Rhine Valley an attractive place to work for international professionals.
With a view of the alpine panorama and ISR's previous campus, the symbolic ground-breaking ceremony was held and cheered in a joint effort by students and representatives from the town of Buchs, sponsors and the Zurich architects Kämpfen Zinke + Partner.
Ecologically sustainable new campus for International School Rheintal
The new building on the corner of Werdenbergstrasse and Hanflandstrasse, just a few metres from the current school, is a three-story building that will be an integral part of the Buchs campus, alongside the BZB and OST. One focus is on the use of sustainable materials, native planting, light-flooded classrooms and a modern, inclusive and safe infrastructure. The newly built, connected double gymnasium will be shared with the town of Buchs so that various sports clubs and groups can benefit from the new building.
A generous green area framing the building, with outdoor learning zones, playground and break areas, will be planted with native plants that form a natural barrier to the street and at the same time contribute to the biodiversity of the surrounding area.
The International School Rheintal in Buchs offers students an international education from kindergarten to grade 12 as part of the International Baccalaureate programme. This public school, with English as the language of instruction, is aimed at internationally oriented families in the region and expatriate employees working in the Rhine Valley. ISR thus makes an important contribution to the recruitment of internationally active companies from the Alpine Rhine Valley region including the Principality of Liechtenstein.
