Kämpfen Zinke + Partner (KZP) is delighted to announce that its International School Rheintal (ISR) project has won two prestigious awards at this year's Global Architecture and Design Awards 2024: 'Sustainable Project of the Year' and 'Institutional Award'.

These awards are in recognition of ISR's innovative design and sustainable concept, which sets the standard for modern educational institutions.

Fostering creativity

The building project, with its 'open learning landscapes', provides students with a flexible and inspiring learning environment.

The three-storey building was designed and built by Zurich-based architects Kämpfen Zinke + Partner AG. Specialising in sustainable and innovative wooden structures, the architects won the tender in 2020.

'Our goal was to create an environment that is not only functional, but also encourages creativity and learning among the students,' explains Maren Zinke, co-managing director and partner at Kämpfen Zinke + Partner. 'These awards are a reflection of our vision and the commitment we put into this project.'

1,800 tonnes of CO₂ saved

After three years of planning and construction, the school opened its doors in August 2023. The ISR building was constructed using prefabricated timber framing from the ground floor up, which not only shortened the construction process but also saved around 1,800 tonnes of CO₂.

The 'Sustainable Project of the Year' and 'Institutional Award' are the building's third and fourth awards this year in the area of sustainability. Recently, the school received an award from the Foundation for Nature and Economy for its nature-oriented environmental design. Earlier this year, ISR received the "German Design Award".

'We are proud to have our approach to sustainability and environmental awareness recognised in this global award' says Liz Free, CEO and Director of ISR. 'These awards recognise our commitment to responsible engagement, a fundamental tenet of an ISR education, embodying our core values of global citizenship, social responsibility, and environmental awareness.'
